Modern Endpoint Management with Microsoft Intune and Autopilot

· Zane Barker

The way most organizations managed devices for two decades no longer fits how people work. Domain-joined machines, imaged on a bench, controlled by group policy, and dependent on a connection back to the corporate network made sense when everyone worked in the office. It makes far less sense when your team is hybrid, remote, and spread across home offices and coffee shops. Modern endpoint management, built on Microsoft Intune, moves device management to the cloud so it works wherever your people do.

What modern management changes

The core shift is from network-anchored to cloud-anchored. Devices join Microsoft Entra rather than an on-premises domain, they receive policy and configuration from the cloud, and they are managed and secured no matter where they are. There is no imaging bench and no requirement to be on the corporate network. Management follows the device and the user, not the building.

Zero-touch provisioning with Autopilot

Windows Autopilot is the feature that makes this tangible. Instead of IT unboxing, imaging, and configuring every machine, a device can be shipped directly to the user. When they turn it on and sign in, it provisions itself: it joins Entra, enrolls in Intune, applies your policies, and installs the right apps, all automatically. For distributed teams, this is transformative. New hires can be productive on day one without a laptop ever passing through IT hands.

Compliance and Conditional Access

Managing a device is only half the point. The other half is trust. Intune lets you define compliance policies, such as requiring encryption, a minimum operating system version, and up-to-date protection. Tie that to Conditional Access, and you get the rule that anchors a Zero Trust posture: only healthy, compliant devices can reach business data. A device that falls out of compliance loses access until it is fixed.

App delivery and updates

Intune becomes your distribution channel for software. You can deploy applications, push configuration, and manage updates from the cloud, so keeping a fleet current no longer depends on users being on the network at the right time. Rolling out a new app or a critical update becomes a policy, not a project.

Security baselines

Rather than hand-building configuration, apply security baselines that encode Microsoft-recommended settings for hardening devices. Baselines give you a strong, consistent starting posture across the fleet, which you can then tailor to your requirements. Consistency is itself a security control.

BYOD without overreach

Not every device is company owned, and you should not manage a personal phone the way you manage a corporate laptop. App protection policies let you protect business data inside managed apps, controlling what can be copied or saved, without taking control of the whole personal device. People keep their privacy, and your data stays protected.

Migrating from on-premises

You do not have to flip everything overnight. Co-management lets Intune and existing on-premises tools manage devices together while you shift workloads to the cloud one at a time. New devices can start fully cloud-managed through Autopilot, while existing devices transition on a schedule. A phased approach keeps users working while you modernize underneath them.

Common pitfalls

  • Treating the move as a tooling swap instead of a shift in operating model.
  • Enabling strict compliance and Conditional Access with no pilot, then locking users out.
  • Managing personal devices too aggressively and driving people to work around IT.
  • Forgetting that provisioning, security, and app delivery all need to be planned together, not one at a time.

Modern endpoint management makes your fleet easier to secure, easier to support, and ready for a workforce that is not coming back to a single office. Maxim Cloud Solutions helps organizations move to Intune and Autopilot and build a secure modern workplace on Microsoft 365. Talk to an expert about modernizing your endpoints.
